Sports Sales Are Something to Cheer About!

So, they’re switching you from convention sales to sports sales and you’re wondering what the big changes are that are facing you.

Well, the first major difference is that sports sales are sexy.  It’s hard to get media coverage when 1000 accountants are in town, but have 40 boys basketball teams playing over a weekend and you will be all over the television and newspaper.  The economic impact from the accountants may be a lot greater, but they have no media appeal.

Of course, the economic impact may not be as different as you may think.  Those accountants are generally traveling alone to your town, while the boys basketball team is bringing at least one relative.  Change this to girls basketball and the extra travelers increase greatly.  Again, Grandma doesn’t show up to watch Junior crunch numbers at the convention.

Plus, the impact of sports is easier to show your community.  Those accountants take their name badges off before they begin exploring your town.  The sports folks, on the other hand, are wearing their colors.  They have badges boasting their allegiance to their sons/daughters, etc.  They are proud to say they are in town for a tournament.  The accountants don’t bring it up at all.

Each community is different, however if your hotels stay fairly busy during the week with corporate business and need weekend activity, once again, you can be the community hero.  With rare exception, sports is a weekend business.  The hospitality industry and the entire area can’t help but notice the impact of your sales.

The best part of sports sales is that, with the support of your boss, you will get all the education and support you need from your friends and colleagues at the National Association of Sports Commissions.  Our main role at the NASC is to make you more professional.  We do this through education, contacts, business opportunities and so much more.

Join us this March in Sacramento for our 25th annual symposium.  You will be glad you did!
