Carey served as the Director of Civic Facilities for the City of Salem, Virginia from 1983-2013 prior to his current role as the Director of Tourism. He has significantly impacted the sports business overall in the Virginia's Blue Ridge region by serving as Tournament Director for 102 NCAA Championships. Carey is a member of the inaugural class of Salem Alumni Hall of Fame, a member of the Salem-Roanoke Baseball Hall of Fame and a member of the Virginia High School League Hall of Fame.
