John Shaner brings a rich sports background to his position as the City of Salem’s Director of Parks & Recreation where he has worked for the City of Salem for 22 years. As a college football player at West Virginia Wesleyan College and as a graduate assistant football coach at Marshall University, Shaner leaned the importance of both teamwork and hard work when it comes to creating and maintaining successful programs.

The Salem native and resident, oversees all of the programs and facilities in the City’s Parks and Recreation system including the James I. Moyer Sports Complex, Spartan Field, Historic Kiwanis Field, Senior Center, Special Events and Youth and Adults Sports.

Shaner has served as the Tournament Director for nearly 100 Softball, Baseball, Basketball, Soccer, Lacrosse Tournaments and National Championships ranging from ASA,NSA,USSSA,AAU,ISF Championships to college conference championships in the BIG EAST, Big South and Atlantic 10. He also is responsible for bring the USA Olympic Softball Team to Salem to play in front of sell-out crowds on four different occasions since 2001. He has also played an integral role in assisting Carey Harveycutter with hosting over 80 NCAA Championship that were played in the City of Salem.
