Crisis Management for Sports Events
Monday, September 22, 2014
8:00 am - Noon CT
Co-located with the NASC Market Segment Meetings and USOC Olympic Sportslink (Must register separately.)
Keynote: Daniel Diermeier, Ph. D. University of Chicago. Dr. Diermeier has presented to the United States Olympic Committee and the Association of Chief Executives for Sport (ACES) and is a recognized expert in crisis management.
The session will help establish a philosophy concerning crisis management. The many factors leading to dealing with a crisis of any kind, including security issues, will be better appreciated. This session is open to all CSEE participants and professionals working sports events at all levels (NASC membership required to enroll in CSEE; registration fee required to attend).
- A keynote presentation will set the stage for the balance of the session. Key issues will be framed to assist attendees in seeing things in the same way. Principles learned can be applied to any event.
- A scenario will be presented. It will describe a security and safety issue that grows beyond personal safety to emotional issues and competing points of view. Attendees will participate in a team approach to resolution of the issues created by the crisis. The exercise will conclude with a mock media conference and debriefing.
- After the table exercise a case history or two will be presented along with comments and discussion.
Attendees should expect to learn the key issues in crisis management and appreciate the importance of managing the flow of information. Those more involved in event production can expect to learn the importance of a crisis management plan for the event or venue.
